Pimple-popping videos have gone viral because, believe it or not, a lot of people out there enjoy watching brave dermatologists and everyday folks take on alien-sized blemishes. Secretly, we can’t blame them — it’s easy to push past the disgust and find yourself mesmerized by what is unfolding before you.
But it doesn’t stop at acne. YouTube is full of other weird delights and, since it’s prime beach season, we thought we’d share another unsettling-but-remarkably-addictive video fad: sunburn peeling. Think about it: You probably struggle not to pick and peel your own light burn when it starts to flake. Now take that to the next level and you’ve got these videos of people tearing off huge layers of skin in one smooth go. It’s kind of like peeling away plastic film.
Below, we’ve pulled together an assortment of the freakiest ones. But before you watch, a word of warning: Sunburns are bad news. UV rays do major damage to your skin and can lead to cancer if you habitually expose your unprotected skin to the sun. Everyone should wear sunscreen every day, especially in summer when you’re outside more often — and remember to reapply!
If you’re not convinced that you need to take precautions, these videos will definitely change your mind. Good luck getting through them.
This dad says he’s “peeling like a snake,” and it seems to never end.
This one we almost have to look away from…
Turn the sound on. Hearing the skin come off makes this seriously unreal.
It’s safe to say you should never forget about protecting your feet too.
This man tells viewers that the peeled skin feels like Saran Wrap! We’re really hoping he takes a hat with him on his next beach trip.
Oh and one last important note: Don’t do this at home! Peeling your sunburn — even just small spots — prematurely can affect the healing process. Dr. Debra Jaliman, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, told GoodHousekeeping.com that improperly removing the skin “can lead to scarring and infection.”
So there you have it — you’ve been warned.
