Low Vitamin D Levels May Not Increase Risk of Asthma, Dermatitis

Vitamin D supplementation may not show favorable effects in reducing the risk of asthma in children or adults, atopic dermatitis, or allergies according to a new study.

Some previous epidemiological studies have suggested that low vitamin D levels are associated with increased rates of asthma, atopic dermatitis–an itchy inflammation of the skin–and elevated levels of IgE, an immune molecule linked to atopic disease (allergies).?Efforts to increase vitamin D levels will probably not result in decreased risk of adult and pediatric asthma, atopic dermatitis, or elevated IgE levels.’

In the new work, researchers looked at genetic and health data on more than 100,000 individuals from previous large studies to determine whether genetic alterations that are associated with vitamin D levels predispose people to asthma, dermatitis, or high IgE levels.

Allergic Asthma Patients: Acupuncture Approach Could Improve the Quality of Life

Asthma symptoms triggered by allergens could lead to allergic asthma. A large randomized controlled, pragmatic trial that included 1445 patients with allergic asthma has recently found acupuncture to be added in the routine care and showed improvements in both the quality of life, physical and mental health for those receiving acupuncture.

The successful results, reported after 3 months of treatment and maintained through the 6-month follow-up, are described in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (JACM), a peer-reviewed publication from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers.
